Research as a Profession

Abstract

While the practicing physician's goal is to care for patients, promoting and maintaining their health, the research physician's goal is to produce generalizable knowledge. These distinct goals give rise to practices and methods that are not only different but also sometimes contrary, leading many to wonder: How can one be a responsible physician and a responsible researcher?
