The Merits of Merit

Abstract

How are people to be chosen for jobs and educational opportunities? Opponents of affirmative action draw a sharp contrast between two possible approaches: on one side, employment and admission procedures based on merit; on the other, affirmative action programs that dilute the merit principle.
