Abstract
Sanford Levinson is "highly uncertain that there are any useful general norms that offer much help" in deciding whether or how a state should preserve public monuments that were erected to express sentiments it now rejects. Clearly, the decision depends to a large extent on how odious those sentiments now appear, and on how hurtful they are to members of the present-day community.
