Abstract
âMaternal Health,â âEnd poverty and Hunger,â âCombat HIV/AIDS;â What do these three United Nations Millennium Goals have in common? Increased access to family planning tools could help achieve all of them. There are several viable policies that could be implemented which would help to lower crude birth rates in the Sub-Saharan region, while at the same time increasing womenâs agency and child health. Because Africa is very much subject to western ideas about family planning and population control due to its reliance on aid flows, it often falls victim to Western controversies about acceptable forms of birth control. The United States plays an important role in Africaâs family planning policy, and should use this role to mediate future emergencies that would emerge if population growth is not stymied.
